Synopsis

18-year-old Taavi, who never goes anywhere without his video camera, and his young and wealthy friends find themselves on the cusp of adulthood. After throwing a wild party at the mansion left to him by his deceased parents, Taavi shoots video of the party-goers in their various states of undress and drunken sexual congress. What begins as a prank spurs Taavi and his friends Jere, Sami, and Markus to form a club, the only requirement for admission being that each young man must bring a tape of his latest sexual conquest to every club meeting.

This risqué game quickly degenerates into dangerous compulsion as relationships implode and the boys forsake their girlfriends in favor of prostitutes and “swingers”. As currents of coercion and abuse enter the picture, each young man must ultimately confront his own morality in the viewfinder. (Finnish with English subtitles)

Review

A well-crafted, brazen look at teen hormones in the technological age (and this was even before the iPhone), Young Gods follows a group of privileged teens who make a habit of filming their sexual conquests. The boys soon form a club - wherein each member is expected to bring a new video of their sexual shenanigans to every meeting. Things quickly get out of control as the boys begin seeking out stranger, more dangerous sexual scenarios to impress their buddies.

While there is no real gay content to speak on, this frenetic Finnish film features a wealth of nudity from a sexy young cast.

Looking at our world where there seems to be little guidance for youth to find spiritual context, “Young Gods” looks at confusion in the minds of four young Finns—all high school graduates. There is Taavi whose father has just died and left him his wealth. He looks at and moves through life at a distance and sees everything through the lens of his camcorder. Jere is dead emotionally even though he has a girlfriend with whom he finds no comfort. Sami is overweight, plain and lacks self-esteem and Markus has good intentions but is totally immature.

Interesting But Flawed

I figured since TLA was announcing the dvd release of the film in their
gay and lesbian section YOUNG GODS contained such content. it does
not. In terms of gay characters or plotlines the quota is zilch, zippo, nada. I'm guessing Finnish films but nature are solemn, morbid and
depressing which this film certainly is. In terms of gay interest the only
reason to buy it is to see the rather decent amount of frontal male nudity. the blond on the cover has a stunning bod and is hung like a
horse. This is a definite rent not buy situation.
