Simply put, a most splendid movie from Russia about LOVE! Not only entertaining, but by its very nature, true-to-life, in its meaning. This film is melodramamic without being overly sentimental, yet very action packed! The actors are to be commended for their portrayals, as they definitely added to the story line. How different Russia looks today! No gulags, or KGB. The one cop that appears is SO gay, and turns up later in the film as a female impersonator! The scenery and sets are bright, colorful, and cheerful, like the film itself. The story is magical and requires, like all fantasies, some suspension of belief. But the results are worth it. Handsome ad-exec Timofei falls in love with stunning TV anchorwoman Vera. They are sensous and share a love of food. Even Timofei's sheets have apples on them. Enter innocent young Uzbek Ulumzhi, who sets his sights on Timofei immediately, and we have a charming, loving, and enduring threesome after a few fits and starts. Homophobia is alive and well in Russia as it is here, but the trio survives all trials. There are certain faults, and some say the ending is a bit hokey, but the overall feeling is so satisfying, the appeal and sincerity of the actors so powerful, this magical little gem is a joy from start to finish.

I love this film. I found the Uloomji character to be completely beguiling and thought the performance was great. The movie is quite unique and you never really know where it's going. But I do agree that the tacked on Hollywood ending was infuriating and totally out of place given the tone of the "real" ending to the film.

Almost enjoyable until you reach the point where you see this guy is going to have equal passion for the woman and the boy. It makes no sense. If his feelings were truly ambivalent, eventually he would choose and someone would have a broken heart. That's life. Take the kid; he's adorable and beguiling. And that tacked on two-minute Hollywood ending is nauseating.

It's very rare for me to give a movie such a low rating as half-star, especially a foreign film, but there were too many elements about this film that made me really want to never see it again.

The plot is all over the place and never really quite knows which direction to take. Newcomer Damir Badmaev (Uloomji) delivers a wooden and mediocre performance for a role that requires charm and zest, while Mr. Koryakovsky tries to make the most of his badly written role.

The only saving grace comes from the female narrator, Lyubov Tolkalina (Vera), who is particularly amusing in a sequence where she convinces Uloomji's uncle that she's a transvestite.

Other than that, the director/writer Olga Stolpovskaja (who claims this story is autobiographical) has created more of a mess than an actual movie.

For a more fulfilling foreign experience, watch France's Just A Question of Love instead.
