Those of you who have followed my reviews know that when I like something, I really like it--let me tell you in advance that this review is going to be a rave.
"We're All Angels" (directed by Robert Nunez), a documentary which is the fantastic story of up and coming singing stars, Jason and deMarco who are both Christian and gay. This beautiful film is filled with such love that it almost jumps out and kisses the viewer. Unfortunately, I received my copy about 3 hours toO late as I had just finished blocking the schedule for our festival and could not fit it in, But I did find a solution--the Festival is going on the road to north Arkansas and "We"re All Angels" will open the first ever Eureka Springs Diversify Pride GLBTQ Film Mini-Fest on November 3.
Jason and deMarco are two beautiful guys who write and sing about Jesus. 'That's right"they sing about Jesus and faith and they do so beautifully. They also record in their studio in Texas and perform all over Americaâ"in churches, schools, and clubs and at pride events. As the movie was being made they were beginning the crossover into modern pop music but the point of the film is the controversy engendered in the world of evangelical Christianity. The duo struggles for acceptance, all the while deeply loving each other and while the controversy rages around them.
The film follows their struggle and their love and we get to know them in-depth. We hear their music and watch them sing, we go into their hearts and their home, we watch as they record and as they play on stage ad on the road and we watch the quarrel and make up. We share their joys and feel their pain and we learn how they grew up and came out, how they met and fell in love and how they both work and live together. Their story is right there on the front lines of the war zone between sexuality and spirituality and it personifies as well as celebrates how the power of music and love can bring a community together and bring about both liberation and self-acceptance.
We watch a love story unfold right before our eyes (and I found it difficult not to fall in love them myself). The question we ask is how that love can survive in a world where lives are on public display, especially in the world of popular music and under the careful scrutiny of a world and religion which are hostile to who they are.
"We're All Angels" is a movie for everyone as it examines our relationship with our own spirituality and the effect of religion on our lives and the gay community. There is much to be learned here for religious people as well and helps us look at life from the heart instead of from the religious view. This is also a film that looks at the nature of relationships and shows what two people who want to be together face and how they love and support each other as they face the challenges of a world and a religion that does not want to accept them. And this is a film for all of us who have felt somewhat different or who have loved or who have tried to make the world a better place.
"We're All Angels" shows how youth can help change the world and as you watch you are filled with a sense of pride. I can only use the term "achingly beautiful" to describe it. Like I told âaeBob and Jack after I saw the documentary about them, I must say to Jason and deMarco and the director, Robert Nunez, and the entire staff that worked on the film, "I love you guys".
