Review

Beginning in the present day, we meet boyfriends Danny and Allan at the opening of Danny’s first New York City gallery show, which consists of erotic paintings of Danny’s first love, Carter. Triggered by memories of their romance, Danny takes us back 15 years to high school. Danny (Tye Olson, star of Tru Loved) was picked on there for being a sissy boy. His best friend was another outcast, Andy (Ellie Araiza), a physically disabled girl. Together they formed a tight pair and dreamt of a happier life beyond high school. A new boy in school, Carter (Kyle Clare), is a big-time swimmer and totally cute. Carter’s mom has met Danny’s dad at an AA meeting and Danny ends up at the house with a troubled Carter, who is drawn to him. We watch this tender love blossom amidst tremendous challenges and secrecy. But after losing an important swim meet, a despondent Carter ends his life. Danny overcomes his grief through his burgeoning art talent but never completely moves on. Fast forward 15 years and Danny is still obsessively painting his young love. Allan demands that Danny focus on the present day, threatening to leave if he doesn’t. A sweet tale of first love, grief and healing, Watercolors is a stunning feature debut for writer/director David Oliveras.

I think it's pathetic that gays think all movies should contain nudity. As if they expect full frontal all the time. This is why there is porn. Go watch that!

A Good Gay TearJerker-But Why Prudish About Nudity?

Green Giant wrote on 02/10/2010:

I saw the film in NYC at the Quad Cinema's
recent mini gay film festival. it was sweet and
nicely romantic with just the right touch of
realism. stars Kyle Clare and Tye Olson make
a perfect Romeo and Romeo.

My only real critcism as it were is why no
frontal nude scenes? Granted the film is about
high school students but its not made for high
school but for an adult audience. During the
film director Oliveras photographs Clare's
gorgeous well toned butt on three instances as if he were shooting a gay porn video. In other
words why are films made for and marketed to
a gay adult audience just as prudish and
up tight about showing male genitalia as major
studios? It seems like a cop out to me.

Haunted by the Past

“Watercolors”

Haunted by the Past

Amos Lassen

The best thing I can say about “Watercolors” is that it is a wonderful film. The acting is excellent and the writing is well done (albeit a little melodramatic), the cinematography is beautiful and the casting (including Greg Louganis) is perfect. It‘s all about true love and being haunted by a high school relationship. I do not want to say too much about it but I do recommend that you see it. Upon arriving at the opening of his first New York City exhibition. a gifted young artist finds himself looking at his past and remembering his first love. He wants to use the leassons he learned then to save the relationship with his present lover. The film is framed by scenes of Danny (the artist) as an adult and we see that his boyfriend is worried that he cannot get over his high school crush. He tells Danny that a living person cannot compete with a memory that has become glorius and that that memory could kill their relationship.
