Synopsis

From the director of Coffee Date comes this endearing tale of a witty teenager tackling homophobia in her new high school and her friendship with the closeted star football player.

Review

Cute, headstrong Tru (Najarra Townsend) has been uprooted from the comfortable, gay-friendly environment of San Francisco and dropped in a conservative little town by her two moms. Forced to start fresh in a new school, the sassy 16-year-old is now the odd girl out. When the charming African-American star quarterback Lodell takes an interest in the new student, everyone has an opinion about the budding relationship. Tru finds herself in the middle of the popular kids, but something is a bit off with her new boyfriend, and she suspects that Lo is on the down low! When confronted, the two make a pact to continue the amorous charade, but she refuses to be silent in the face of homophobia. Tru starts up a Gay-Straight Alliance, and her new hipster friend Trevor (Jake Abel) causes tension with Lo. The young romantic is forced to choose between protecting her closeted faux boyfriend and following her heart toward the new one. To help her along the way is a brilliant supporting cast of out actors and supporting allies including Jane Lynch (“The L Word,” The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Bruce Vilanch, Jasmine Guy (“A Different World,”) Nichelle Nichols (“Star Trek”) and Alec Mapa ("Ugly Betty"). Director Stewart Wade’s sophomore effort is a delightful and uplifting film about young love and the way unconventional families navigate through conventional waters in a homophobia-filled high school.

  Young and Gay and Wonderful

“Tru Loved”
Young and Gay and Wonderful
Amos Lassen
Coming soon from Regent Releasing is a beautiful and poignant film about what it is like to grow up as a young gay male.
Tru (Najarra Townsend) is a 16 year old high school student in San Francisco. She is uprooted from her gay friendly home by her lesbian moms (Alexandra Paul and Cynda Williams) and is moved away not only from the city she loves but from her friends, her school and her two gay dads. She goes to a conservative neighborhood in southern California but she never feels she fits in because of her non-traditional family. Surprising to Tru, Lodell, the school football hero takes a liking to her. Come to find out, Lodell is actually gay and in the closet. He loves sports but doesn’t feel comfortable with his teammates. He loves musicals but because he is a jock and African-American, he doesn’t feel that he belongs in that world. He are Tru are very much alike—neither feels that he belongs in the world he lives in.
Lodell really likes Tru but he is attracted more to Walter (Tye Olson) who is gay and out and constantly teased by Lo’s best friend. Manuel. One day when Manuel openly makes fun of Walter, Try takes a public stand and decides to start the school’s first gay-straight alliance club. The turnout for the first meeting is small but everyone seems enthusiastic. Trevor (Jake Abel) is straight but is being raised by his gay uncle gains Tru’s attention and he seems to feel the same toward her but Tru has been covering for Lo by pretending to be his girlfriend,
This causes Tru to examine her heart and she is torn between her friend and her attraction to Trevor. She looks to her family to understand honest, trust, friendship and love and tries to work things out without hurting anyone.
The film offers strong messages about social conflicts and human responses but it is really about working through human relationships, building families and strengthening friendships. The chemistry of the cast shows this wonderfully. The movie is sensitive and touching as it addresses important social issues. Director Stewart Wade is to be highly commended for this beautiful film. You may remember him as the director of “Coffee Date”, an award winning gay-themed film. This is one of the must-see films of the year.
