Review

A filmed musical stage play, The Truth is the powerful story of a black family that's in a state of crises without even knowing it. Two of the men in the Sutton family are living a lie as "straight" men when in fact they like to "kick it back" with their boys. Performed in Washington DC to packed houses, this play packs a powerful punch of emotion; be prepared. Think Tyler Perry without Madea, a gay storyline and throw in a few great tunes.

Olivia Sutton (Tracie Jade) is the matriarch of a family that's moving on. Her son Chris (Marlon Anthony Russ) is a high school football hero with not much to show on his report card. Her daughter Tiffany (JaWuana Lindsey) has just finished her master's program and is bringing home her soon-to-be-husband Donnie. Chris's friend AJ (LC Harden, Jr.) comes over to hang out, and it's soon clear that these two young men are lovers. AJ's ready to come out, but Chris is firmly in the closet. He doesn't want his devout Christian family to know that he's gay. And then when Donnie meets AJ mysterious sparks fly.
With moving musical interludes and fine acting, this well-paced stage play is never less than compelling. One thing to keep in mind here is that this is a stage play filmed on a micro-budget. The technical aspects are not of the highest caliber, but the play and message shine through loud and clear.

This play is great! One of the best little stage plays in years, THE TRUTH is well written and the actors are dedicated and clearly trained from Howard University, they all have that Debbie Allen swagger. GET THIS PLAY!

I can't wait to see "Drag On" this spring...

I saw this play live in DC, and I was singing the music and repeating the lines of the play over and over again for about a month! It really is a must see. Can't wait to see more from the Restoration Stage team.

“The Truth” is a filmed musical play and it is the powerful story of a black family, the Suttons, that does not realize it is in the midst of crisis. Two pf the family men are pretending to be straight as they carry on with men “on the downlow”. With an excellent cast and a strong message as well as a surprise ending, there is plenty to please the viewer here. The play manages to touch upon every subject that is part of today’s black community as well as of the larger society. Even though we know that homosexuality is not something new in our society, the downlow seems to have become a part of the way that some live today.
Chris (Marlon Anthony Russ) is a high school football player who is lacking in academic skills. His sister, Tiffany has just been awarded her master’s degree and is about to get married to Donnie. There is something about the relationship between Chris and his best friend, AJ that lets us know that they are also lovers. When Donnie meets AJ, something else happens and tensions become high. We see that masculinity can be defined differently and Chris, by wanting to stay in the closet so as not to disappoint his family, realizes this all to well.
