Review

A compelling character study - revolving around the confused relationship between a 17-year-old Memphis student and a slightly older Vietnamese immigrant. Lincoln is a darkly handsome youth who, though having a girlfriend, cruises the city's parks after dark for furtive sexual encounters with other men. There, and later in a peep show store, he meets Minh, a talkative but somewhat troubled young man and the son of a black GI and a Vietnamese woman. Minh takes a liking to the shy Lincoln and they soon set up a strange, quasi-sexual friendship that quickly results in a boat ride deep down the Mississippi Delta in a modern Tom and Huck adventure. These two opposites -Lincoln, the privileged white teen, and Minh, the poor foreigner - for a bond that inevitably leads to trouble. The film suffers from poor sound, but for adventurous filmgoers, it will not disappoint.

Lincoln is a young man getting ready to turn eighteen and basically leads a straight life Yet he has a secret life and he is drawn to dark places to have anonymous sex with men. One night while at a video arcade, he meets John, a gay man who had been born in Vietnam. John is in his twenties and his father was an African-American soldier. The two men spend time together and Lincoln takes John to his father’s boat. The two set off for the Mississippi Delta and the fireworks begin. Such is a sketchy plot outline of Strand Releasing’s “The Delta”.
The movie begins strongly showing a side of life that many do not get to sea. It seemed that the film was going to be a love story between John and Lincoln but in the final quarter of the film things begin to change. Instead of being a movie about young love, we get a film about the dangers of the world of underground sex and this puzzled me. The movie is dark and the plot wanders and nothing happens in the film. The actors never inhabited their roles and they simply threw their parts away.
Shayne Gray who plays Lincoln is handsome and hunky and it is a pity he cannot act. One of the things that really hurt the film is the low production values. The fact that there is no resolution at the end does not help.
