James Robert Baker, the cult author of Tim & Pete, killed himself in 1997, but this posthumous novel in the form of an oral history is a terrific legacy. It's a gripping story from beginning to end. The story takes the form of a transcription of a collection of tapes sent by his longtime friend Dean Seagrave. Jim was expecting a bootleg of the Bad Religion show at the Palace. What he got was Bad Religion, allright! It's the story of of a speeded-up maniac on the hunt for his even crazier ex-lover. Dean's house burned down, and he suspected his ex-lover,so he rented a car and went on a hunt…from Griffith Park (where he says he spotted John Rechy sunning himself) to seedy LA sex clubs. Dean is irrational, but it can all be explained by the spell his ex, Pablo Ortega put on him. He rips Pablo's mothers dress off, yanks a PWA out of his weelchair and brandishes a gun at a peep show. It's a wild ride, leave yourself a few hours to read it, as you won’t want to put this book down.
