Synopsis

In this stunning, emotional and sexual adaptation of Bruce LaBruce's "JD" stories, an 18 year-old suburban boy falls in love with a gorgeous, crack-addicted street hustler.

Cliff (Noble) is a cute suburban teenager celebrating his 18th birthday and his mom gives him a skateboard -- a teen item. But his precocious 12 year-old sister Cookie (Wanstall) has a whole other agenda. She gives him a small bottle of vodka, a joint, a subway token and her card says "Have Sex". So off Cliff goes downtown on a priapic prowl in this emotional and fiercely erotic adaptation of Bruce LaBruce's "JD" stories.

Cliff heads straight for a hustler area in this unidentified Canadian city. There he is instantly drawn to the hunky Butch (Fehr) whose smoldering good looks and bedroom eyes will be burned into your memory. The boys head out for a night on the town. Whores, crackheads, exotic johns, a pregnant drug dealer -- it's all in a night for Butch, but brand-new for the suburban Cliff. Cliff's got a liberal, loving, pot-smoking mom, medicated hyper-active sister and dinners at home. The friendship and faltering romance develops for these two boys until drugs pull them apart.

Sugar is as tight as a drum, the characters well-developed and the story crisp as could be. With first-rate, highly charismatic and sexually alluring actors, Sugar is sure to satisfy your cravings.

I had read the synopsis and other reviews of this film, was was totally unprepared for its graphic nature of real-life. The director takes you on an unbelieveable journey by this young man. Unless you have been exposed to the 'City' with all of its under-currents of degradations of life, you cannot truly appreciate what this film is trying to say. This is a true snap-shot in time for the ages. Two scenes in this film have to be identified: 'the rape scence involving the major character and his druggie boyfiend-very frightenly sur-real; the durg-overdose and death scene of his druggie boyfiend- reality to the extreme!' These two(2) are but a small part of the life-style collage that is presented on the screen. It is real, it is hedonistic, it is Gothic, and it is very frightening, but it above all entertaining. This will become a classic in the years to come, because of its protrayals and very realistic portraits, and must be added to your collection. THE GOTHIC REALITY OF LIFE! NJMJr.

I thought this movie was gonna be fun and exciting..it was EHHHHHHHH...i think i went to fast and the fucken dude was totally into this guy hed never met...and the like 9 year old sister was a drug dealer..lol..THAT WAS LIKE THE BEST PART...lol..but besides that..IT TOTALLY WAS A WASTE OF MONEY..and not to forget the nasty asss OBEASE woman scene...!

Unique Plot and Character Development

Really liked this one. At first, I thought, "not another gay-themed hustler flick." However, the characters and plot pleasantly proved me wrong. Well-acted, original, worth seeing. The only negative I found was a lack of pushing a little deeper into a couple interesting sub-plots...

What should have been a promising premise turned into a disaster of a film! Very incoherent story, many leaps of continuity. A waste of some talented actors who've done a lot better in other films. Some frontal nudity and an interesting anal intercourse scene in front of a john-voyeur, but that didn't make-up for a very poorly made film. And I agree - the stars should have had frontal scenes, at least, but didn't. My partner and I were both very disappointed
