Ariztical is releasing “Soul Maid” a parody based loosely on “Sleeping Beauty”. It is romantic, funny and totally politically incorrect. It has the potential to be a wonderful little film but it just doesn’t live up to what it could be. Do not get me wrong—it is not a bad film; it just could have been so much better.
Moses (Joe Schenck), our main character, is victim to seizures and these “time-outs” take on a very strange nature. For Moses these are religious visions from a goddess named Glintentica who is in the process of planning her second coming and her return to earth. She becomes bent on taking over Moses’ soul especially after he meets David (Tom Bailey), the man he has dreamt about. She wants Moses to forget David as well as making sure that gay people will become extinct everywhere.
Moses is incredibly happy now that he is in love so he enlists David and a priest who just happens to be his roommate to find a way to destroy the evil Glintentica, send her back to where she came from and insure that gay people will live happily ever after.
Personally, I like the idea of adapting a fairy tale to a modern setting and I liked the way the actors portrayed their roles. The script, however, as clever as it is, just doesn’t do the job it should and I found that where I should have laughed, I didn’t. It could be because I was tired after teaching six classes but this movie just did not work for me. It contained everything necessary to make it a good experience but it just did not work…and I really wanted it too. There is a great deal of potential here and we will probably see better things coming but for right now I am very disappointed.

Just what did the reviewers see that I did not? They must be associated with the film some how! The only thing good about this movie is the packaging (which the cover model does not even appear in the movie.) Bad movie, Bad script, Bad acting, Bad, Bad, Bad. What a waste of money. My opinion... buy Disney.

This is probably the weirdest, funniest movie I've seen this year. Whoever wrote this was smoking something I'd like to try. Destined to be a cult classic.

I heard about this movie from a friend who saw it play at the New York Gay Film Festival. He described it as one of the more interesting and daring films he'd ever seen at a gay film festival and even compared it to "Rocky Horror Picture Show," one of my favorites. While I think there are moments throughout that invoke the brilliance of something like "Rocky Horror," this movie defies categorization. Is it a gay romantic comedy? A smart political satire on ex-gay movements? A post-sexual orientation dissertation on perceived gender roles? A weird and over-the-top campy gay "Sleeping Beauty?" Amazingly, it is all of these things. don't bother if you're looking for something just like every other dull gay movie you've seen. But if you're in the mood to a) enjoy a gay movie unlike any other you've seen and b) laugh your butt off, this is the one. It gives me hope for the future of gay cinema.

* THE BAD NEWS The guy who appears on this DVDs cover is NOT the star of the film. He does not even appear in this film. The actual actor appears on the back cover. This actor is fairly good-looking and in decent shape but is very hairy, including having a hairy back (eww). Now the actual lead actor *is* good in his role, but, well -- of course, I bought this film *only* for its very interesting and funny story line, but I felt sadden the people involved in releasing this DVD chose to have a misleading cover. (There is NO ironing in the film either!) *THE GOOD NEWS: This is one of the most original and creative gay films I have *ever* seen! The story is totally off-the-wall in a very amusing way and I was amazed at how wonderfully weird many parts of it were. The quality of the filming is average but this is more than redeemed by the many great inventive visual special effects -- including an animated sequence -- that adds greatly to its overall appeal. *MORE BAD NEWS: This film is divided into 4 chapters, each of them often having different people writing and directing them. Sadly, the last chapter, which was written and directed by one man, is a let-down from the rest of the film. While the ending was predictable, it could have been so much better if it had the fresh feel and energy of the first 3 chapters. Also of Bad News in there are NO Extras at all on the DVD. This most certainly was a film that deserved Extras, especially any Deleted Scenes, Outtakes, and most of all a Making Of, if only to find out how the heck the idea for this film happened! But none of these are there. *MORE GOOD NEWS: This is a film most definitely worth watching, particularly if you are a bit nicely weird yourself. It is also a movie worth owning (despite the disappointing discovery the guy on the DVD's cover is only that). I suspect it will be quite some time before as different, silly, inventive, crazy, and overall REALLY GOOD GAY FILM is made. *
