You’ve seen them, the ones with the innocent look, the lithe young body devoid of hair, always well groomed, always sweet looking, but don’t let them fool you. Once you get these young men into the bedroom, or wherever you take them, the sex is hot, the action is hot, everything gets hot, for they are Smooth and Sassy.
John Patrick always put together the cream of the cream of erotic authors, and Smooth and Sassy does not fail to deliver. If you like them smooth, and you like them hot, and you always want them a little sassy, then you must add this anthology to your John Patrick collection.
The late John Patrick, the editor of this well-named collection called Smooth and Sassy, was famous for producing a long series of books that feature hot sex and make no claim to anything approaching literary excellence. They do not have to. Their titillating titles offer the reader a smorgasbord of physical pleasure for every gay man’s taste. Among them are Boy Toy, Barely Legal, Beautiful Boys, Naughty by Nature, Fresh ‘n’ Frisky, Virgins No More, and Wild ‘n’ Willing. Although the stories are easily interchangeable between books they almost always live up to the promise of their titles. This anthology, now in its second edition, is no exception because the stories will satisfy readers on the purely physical level and sometimes even on the level of writing ability. Supposedly the stories bear the common theme of “boys” who look innocent but turn out to be anything but. That will be no surprise to longtime Patrick fans. Since he is careful to say that they all take place in the era before AIDS, anything can happen in any position and usually does. For instance, two “straight” hustlers find love in Looking for Some Action, and a high school coach gets his jollies in The Paddle. Other stories include the aptly-named Cherry Boy, Harder and Harder, Papi Does Best and the let-it-all-hang-out A Glimpse of Dick and Private Dick. The introduction contains an unexpectedly interesting discussion of German author Thomas Mann and the real-life inspiration for the nubile young teenager he lusted after in his famous novella Death in Venice.
