An interesting movie came my way the other day. Ooops, did I say interesting? The nude scenes in “Sideline Secrets” (In the Pink Productions) are very interesting, the movie has the potential to be very interesting but something happened while it was being made. Most of you who have read my reviews in the past know that I do not give bad reviews. I do not like to pan the work of others, especially when I think that there were good intentions involved. What happened here I am not quite sure, but I will attempt to explain what I can.
I must start of my saying that James Townsend who co wrote and stars in this film is as cute as a button and as well endowed as a horse. And he is not a bad actor. Well, what I mean to say he is not a bad actor compared to the rest of the cast who personify the word wooden. But that could also be the director’s fault, Steven Vasquez, who was the co writer as well.
At what appears to be a simple story gets more complicated as we go along and about a fourth of the way through I was completely lost. But I digress—let’s talk about what the movie is about. Well I would if I could, I am just not sure. It seems that Devon (cute and hung James Townsend) who appears to be a typical teenager and high school student has a successful family and a cute girlfriend. Devon suddenly realizes that he is interested in the male body (his own as well—he has a lovely jack off scene) and actually goes to a gay club when he quickly falls in love with Brian (Alex Wilson, who is no shoddy number). As they fall deeper in love, the plot falls deeper in the mud. Suddenly Devon’s step dad throws him out and Devon goes to his boyfriend who was once involved with Devon’s father who is molesting one of his psychiatric patients who is involved in sado masochistic sex play with other guys who are friends of Bryan who has also been sleeping with Devon’s father and whose best friend (or maybe lover, who knows?) is involved with the detective who is investigating the case of missing good looking young men who are involved with Devon’s father who is in partnership with the cop who is having sex with one of his partner’s patients who is the mother of one of the molestees and who also is having an affair with Devon’s father. Confused? This is just a start. Somewhere in all of this is a good story.
Sure it is a low budget film and Townsend is surely cute but….
The story is actually very good…I think. I really think there is potential here somewhere. It was not a waste of time, I actually enjoyed it, and maybe because I was hoping that the more I got into it, the more I might understand it. It is a mystery that it still is a mystery. There is lots of eye candy and even though I have been quite cruel, I really had a good time watching it and I am a James Townsend fan from now on. I don’t know if it is blonde hair or his amazing eyes or his incredible equipment but I would venture to say that he will be someone (if he stops writing screenplays and concentrates on acting).
I will not give this movie a totally bad review because as bad as it was it was actually a very sweet love story. I was not a total waste of time because there is promise there. With proper direction and some real actors I am willing to bet that this could be a great movie. The plot has promise and it could certainly be polished. I liked the twists and turns, I even liked the actors for trying and yes I would recommend this movie—not because of what it is but because of what it could have been.

Terrible acting. No, really, terrible acting. The mother, the father-in-law, the cousin, the boyfriend, the main guy. All bad. They tried. The script tried. But, it was really bad.

And it was a little creepy, verging on pedophile like.

That said, if twinkie boys are your type and you don't mind the acting. You might dig it. There's lots of male nudity.

"Sideline Secrets" is not award-winning. Nor does it promise to be. What you get instead is a well-done low budget film that could have been REALLY REALLY good if the right budget were in place. The story is twisted from start to finish. Most fo the actors possess talent that will come out brightly if/when they are given the right oppurtunity. However, with a film of this scale, one experienced in film themselves, is often aware of the limits that arise. In reading the end-credits and seeing most actors had crew positions as well, it makes you realize what a group-effort project this was. I congratulate it for its strong effort. All in the all, the story is very original. It is something we have not seen played out countless dozens of times. There are no heartbroken, dying of disease, storylines here. Instead, you have a strong, unique story, with characters that actually have depth. A lot of reviewers have complained that the film gets confusing towards the end. I disagree. The end does wrap a lot of events up quite quickly, but it is never hard to follow. My best advice is to stop trying to find all the stuff to complain about and just sit back and enjoy the movie for what is is worth. I look forward to seeing the sequel but do wish the original cast had returned to continue the story that they had created...

I actually expected this movie to be really bad based on a few of the reviews and seeing what other films the editor was recommended along with it. I was pleasantly surprised to see differently. The film is very low budget but it does manage to stand out highly above its competitors. The acting of the young cast is pretty good, however the older cast members need some improvement, but maybe their over the top campy acting was meant to be? The film does deal with some very serious subject matter, but keeps it light for the most part, which is good for a film of this level. I believe there is a lot more to the storyline than was shot. Probably because of budget restraints. But, neverminding that, it is a solid piece of entertainment. This is one sexy popcorn flick I have not grown tired of!!!

The story is ok but the acting is weak - decent theater actors who've not yet learned how to adjust to performing on camera... timing of many lines was off / unnatural.

Lots of naked flesh - in fact all but one of the male leads (the hero's dad) shows full frontal. and any excuse to see Earl McDougal (also of "Dante's Cove" aka Jourdain Dion) in the all-together is fine with me.
