In the summer of 2010, two bold and courageous college students set out to break the record for the world's longest continuous kiss. Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello - two charismatic boy-next-door-types - drew Internet users, celebrities, and news media from around the world to watch them vie for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Political satirist Stephen Colbert even acknowledged them on his Comedy Central show – stating that Matty and Bobby were, "destroying the traditional sanctity of 'Straight World Records.'"

Cheered (and jeered, unfortunately) by fellow students on their campus – and numerous viewers online – Matty and Bobby's story has been a source of inspiration to many. By now we have all heard about Matty and Bobby breaking the world’s record for the longet continuous kiss thereby giving us a bit more of gay pride. Do not think, however, that you are going to see 33+hours of two guys kissing here. The film is so much more than that.

Matt Daley and Bobby Canciello, New Jersey college student, kissed to break the Guinness World Record. The two guys are “just friends” (each has a boyfriend) but they were determined to win the title with a kiss that was not romantic or sexual but friendly and in the process to show that a kiss is a sign of friendship and can be used to let others know how you feel about them. There was also a strong ulterior motive and that was to bring attention to gay rights. I love that youngsters have picked up on the activism and were determined to show the world that we are like everyone else and that a kiss can be just that, simply, a kiss.

The rules required them to remain standing and at a public place and there were to be no breaks or trips to the restroom. They were very lucky to have friends and supporters cheer them on. They trained by developing a set of hand signals to communicate with each other, and even went so far as to arrange a nutrition regimen and they were determined to win this and give the gay community two new men to look up to.

After it was all over, Bobby said that he just wanted to go to bed but before they did, they regaled their friends and supporters with yells of “Advocate love”. They held their kiss from Saturday morning through 8:06 PM Sunday and we now know that they took part in the contest to raise awareness of LGBTQ rights. The kiss to them was a way to “challenge social norms”.
Matty and Bobby are the first same sex couple to attempt to break the world record and as the kiss was going on, their friends were collection donations for the Trevor Project. The two are young, cute and endearing and what they went through was rather harsh. Since they had to be touching and standing at all times, they were very limited and had to drink through straws and retain their body fluids. They prepared well by finding out the best liquids to consume and they were lucky to have friends nearby to cheer them on.

Granted this does not sound like it would make an interesting movie but it did and I think one reason for this is the personalities of Matt and Bobby and the act that they had such good friends for support. There were unexpected obstacles that they managed to overcome bit we also see how their one small feat became an inspiration to so many.
