Review

A very unusual film for gay audiences, this Coen Brothers send-up of gangster flicks features three gay characters in a love triangle and its convoluted plot involves gay love, deceit and murder. While these are not the positive images one usually wishes to see on the screen pertaining to gays, they are imaginatively integrated into the story. By changing the central character of the triangle from woman to man, the standard femme fatale is replaced by a homme fatale.

Thoroughly engrossing, brilliantly produced, and overflowing with sardonic wit, bristling dialogue and operatic violence, Byrne heads the excellent cast. He plays Tom, a mob insider whose endless scheming provides the plot with an abundance of unexpected twists, double-crosses and red herrings. The story follows a fight for control of City Hall between Tom's boss, Leo (Finney), and an arch-rival. In the midst of the fray is the very queer Bernie Bernbaum (Turturro), a weasely small-time hood who's trying to muscle in on both men's numbers racket.

As Bernie, Turturro is tantalizingly over-the-top. In her cinematic debut, Harden is superb as the hard-as-nails Verna, who is both Bernie's sister and Leo's girlfriend.
