David Majors should be looking forward to a long and prosperous life: after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he's attending college courtesy of Uncle Sam and riding the fast track to success. He's tall, fit, and good–looking, so shouldn't the world be his oyster? But underneath his clothes—and beneath the surface—David is a mess of scar tissue and insecurity.
Then he meets Kevin Boxer, another former Army Ranger. Their first night together, Kevin stares David's scars in the face and doesn't flinch, instead showering David with the passion and attention he craves but never imagined possible. Slowly but surely, Kevin helps David rebuild his confidence, and the two of them begin to build their life together. But their journey is far from over, and it turns out Kevin may need David to help him heal some scars of his own.
Magic Fingers is a story about a couple of veterans who, through a chance meeting, begin to develop a relationship. Etienne, the author of this story, brings us a tale so uncharacteristic that I was taken aback. David Majors and Kevin Boxer meet and start a relationship. Two lives that are parallel in pain and loneliness also bring their own brand of scars ~ some physical, some emotional. As Kevin deals unflinchingly with the scars and reality that David must deal with, he has yet to deal with his own scars. Kevin works with David to get him back into mainstream life by being matter of fact about David’s injuries. What Kevin must face though isn’t nearly as horrific. Together they build a life based solidly on unconditional love.
This is a story with almost no drama. Everything that David and Kevin touch turns to gold. Even the most disturbing event after Kevin’s war wounds, the “abandonment” of Kevin’s nephew and subsequent adoption goes off without a hitch. Only the incident with TSA is a blip on their radar. The development of their family unit is sweet and told with great detail, but the book’s jacket held promise of Kevin having to deal with his scars. I didn’t get that part, unless Etienne was talking about Kevin’s dysfunctional family. And even that wasn’t a major part of the story.
It is still a very positive, sweet story. Give it a chance. You will like it.
