For more than three decades, clinical psychologist, Don Clark, has been speaking to the hearts and minds of gay people, their families, friends, teachers and helpers in the many editions of Loving Someone Gay. With compassion he has promoted communication across generations as well as revealing a path of understanding and reconciliation for parents, siblings, husbands and wives as well as among religious leaders, teachers, librarians, legislators, judges, and law enforcement agencies. Most important he has provided vital insight into the psychodynamics and sociology of individuals, the gay men and lesbians who have been and continue to be misunderstood and abused in societies around the world. With this latest updated edition of his famous book, Dr. Clark shines a clear light into our future in the twenty-first century.
I have to love Lethe Press because it tries so hard to make sure we do not lose the classic works of gay literature as well as some of the books that have been out of print since other presses have folded. A prime example of a book we do not wish to ever lose is Don Clark's Loving Someone Gay that mixes anecdotes, philosophy, stories and advice and gives a wonderful guide for who we are. This edition is fully rewritten for today's times and includes information on politics and lawmakers, the general attitude of the public toward our issues. Originally written in 1988, Clark brings us up to date on gay life and does so in a way that you enjoy reading every word. The book is designed not only for gay people but for families and friends of gay people and it is a wonderful aid for looking at prejudice and confusion and how to build relationships. The book promotes communication, understanding and reconciliation if needed. This new edition contains information on gay marriage and domestic partnerships.
This was one of the first books that I came across when I came out and I love what it said to me--that I am a good person--that's all. All of us have had those feelings of loneliness and self-loathing and Don Clark shows us how to overcome them and basically we do that by taking pride in who we are and knowing ourselves. The book is a look into the psychology of gay men and women and Clark shares his own experiences with us. He writes with sensitivity and style and a gay person himself, he knows what he is talking about. He teaches us how to live and in doing what he says we learn to accept ourselves. We all have trouble accepting differences and it is here that the book excels. By helping us to know ourselves, we are able to accept others and for me, I gained the reinforcement that aside from my sexuality I was like everyone else. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
