Léa Pool’s (Set Me Free) new film Lost and Delirious vividly captures the insular world of the private girls school and the pangs of intense first love. Young Mouse Bradford (Mischa Barton) is sent to an all-girls' boarding school by her distant, unconcerned parents. At first lost, she soon finds friends in her two senior roommates: zingy and ferocious Paulie (Piper Perabo) and charming Tory (Jessica Paré). The three become close friends, during which time Mouse realizes Tory and Paulie are sharing a secret, passionate affair. Mouse accepts this, but the rest of school isn’t so open-minded, and when Tory’s younger sister catches the two, things begin to spiral downward. Tory, determined to fit into her family’s ideals, starts dating boys while Paulie goes ballistic, fueled to reclaim her lover no matter what it takes. Adapted from Susan Swan’s turbulent novel "The Wives of Bath" by screenwriter Judith Thompson, Pool’s first English-language film is a steamy, accomplished and ambitious follow-up to her understated, autobiographical Set Me Free. Thompson’s script removes some of the novel’s more violent and fantastical elements but retains its taut emotional core, Romeo and Juliet-like passion, and a whole lot of tension. There’s certainly a heaping helping of feverish, gorgeously shot sex between the attractive young leads – so much so that a Sundance programmer referred to Lost and Delirious as “eye candy for girls.” And Pool proves herself to be a director Hollywood should part waves for.

What a piece of crap.The ending ruined the whole movie and was a cop out.Reminded me of 1950's Hollywood where all lesbians and gays must be fucked up and killed for being gay.Hmm,let;s see,Shirley MacLaine,Childrens Hour,Lesbian,so she must die,now this crap?BARF!

Lost and Disappointed

The scenery and school campus was the real beauty of this film. The girls' acting seemed a bit pushed as did the transparent symbolism. What I didn't expect was to have the love story to be told from an outsider perspective. I felt the ending pushed me back to another century, and perpetuated the tiresome myth that lesbians will be put in "their place" if they dare to be so bold and brave. As the film began to wind down the ending was so predictable that I felt I must just be wrong and expected a miracle. As far as "Erotic!Gorgeous!", what did I miss? The women nor the acting was exceptional,nor was the plot.

Lost and Delirious is a ‘coming-of-age’story set against the scene of a posh private school. Shakespeare readings, fencing duels and thinly veiled metaphor abound. And yet this story of getting lost on the search for self remains fresh and touching.

Mouse (played by Mischa Barton), the new girl in school, finds herself rooming with two upperclassmen, Tory (Jessica Paré) and Paulie (Piper Perabo). The three become fast friends, sharing their communal desire for acceptance and feelings of abandonment from the families that have placed them here. And even as Mouse is making her first friends, she is soon to realize that her roommates are indeed more than that.

Each young woman is on a search for herself, and when rumours of the relationship between Tory and Paulie surface, Tory is quick to decide her own path cannot include a girlfriend. In a heartfelt scene, she declares to Paulie, “I will never love anyone as much as I love you, I will die knowing that, but you and I can never be.”

As the dynamics between the three girls change, each finds a new outlet: Tory her new boyfriend, which gains her acceptance from her peers and an appearance of normalcy, Mouse a wise-cracking gardener who helps her ‘get back to her roots’, and Paulie a formidable falcon, who, originally wounded, becomes strong and is eventually able to fly away from it all.

The thinly veiled metaphor and the disjoint scenes of the disrought Paulie lend a bit of foreshadowing to the movie’s powerful ending, but the raw emotion and powerful performances more than compensate, giving rise to a beautiful, well-crafted film.
