With a catchy title and an advertising campaign that featured an almost nude muscled Mexican-American stud provocatively sucking his finger, it is no wonder that this film became the sensation that it did in 1997. But is it any good? If you lower your expectations and prepare yourself for cheerfully cheesy queer fun, than this sexy melodramatic soap opera will fill the bill.

Troyano fills the screen with torrid Latino passions, rampant sexual confusion, beautifully bronzed flesh, a vicious killer, the Virgin of Guadeloupe and enough jealousy, revenge and pop culture excesses to satisfy any fan of early Almódovar. Justin is a cute teen closet case living with his mother in East Brooklyn. He finds his hormones kicked into overdrive when his sexy cousin Angel arrives for an extended stay. But the swaggering Angel soon falls for Andrea (a photographer who specializes in erotic portraits of Hispanic men) instead of his panting cousin. What's a horny Latino teen to do? Adding to the spicy cauldron of youthful passions is Carlos (who has the hots for Justin) and Braulio (an exceptionally troubled young man) who in turn loves the philandering Carlos.

Taking its cue from Mexican soap operas, this very un-serious potboiler delivers some funny scenes and some appetizing skin.

“Latin Boys Go to Hell” may not be a movie for everyone but it is an interesting and quite good independent film. It deals with many issues—homosexuality, religion, body culture, and ethnicity and it also touches the Fiesta Fatal (Festival of the Dead), psychoses and parodies the Spanish novella as well. It is a very ambitious movie.
Justin, a gay teenager, is the main character and what happens in his life is our story. Angel, a cousin, arrives from Chicago and Justin realizes that he is in love with him. However, Angel falls for another guy, Andrea who just happens to be the friend of a gay man who is very possessive. As everything goes out of control, drama sets in.
The movie has no pretense—it doesn’t pretend to be a great movie, it is aware that it is a very thin movie with a very fragile script. The characters are trashy but the dialog is very funny and the actors are all good looking. It is a movie that requires no thought—all it s trying to do is to provide a good time. In that, it succeeds very well.
Reminiscent of the early movies of Almodovar and John Waters, it requires a degree of wit and culture to be understood. Much of the humor is subliminal and the sex portrayed is very campy.
From the title, you can expect a campy film or a sexy movie, it is neither, It has camp and it has sex but that is not what defines it. It is not serious drama either. The plot is predictable—what happens to a gay guy who pursues a straight guy. This is a plotline that has been done to death. There is little nudity and the sex is very vanilla. For a film about gay Latinos, this is very, very tame. It just seems to be that if a gay guy is going to lust after a straight guy, the object of that lust should be a knockout. The straight is not only plain in the movie, he is downright ugly.
The movie rests somewhere between a coming of age drama and a spoof of sexploitation films. There is violence in the film with images of castration and the plot is very soap-operatic.
But it is fun and we need fun movies once in a while.

I just really couldn't believe my eyes. I've seen porn videos better than this garbage. And while we're at it, the performers in the porn were better actors than the ones in this (and I use the word lightly) film. There are people who say that Latin Boys Go To Hell is meant to be a joke but I really don't think so.. I think Ela Troyo deliberately made this movie to be serious and it turned out so awful, he/she said, "Wow, that's pretty bad.. let's market it as a parody instead." As a Latino living in the United States, I was utterly embarrassed by this "film" which is the perfect example of a train wreck movie: it's so bad, you have to watch.
Storyline - Bad; Acting - Awful; Overall - Nightmare. I recommend this if you're constipated one night and prunes don't seem to be doing the trick. If you're looking for a smart, sexy and meaningful latin gay movie, Watch the Peruvian film Don't Tell Anyone (No Se Lo Digas A Nadie.) I'll give Latin Boys Go To Hell one positive comment though, some of the guys were pretty good-looking.. but here we go again, I've still seen better looking guys in porn..
