Since 1985’s Mala Noche, Gus Van Sant has dealt unflinchingly with gay subject matter and has become one of the most heralded openly-gay filmmakers of all time. He has veered from the avant-garde – with beloved indie classics like Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho - to the mainstream megaplexes – with films like Good Will Hunting and his questionable shot-by-shot remake of Psycho. His more recent, experimentally minimalist work (Gerry, Elephant and Last Days) is truly hypnotic.
