Bruce Vilanch – with his appearances on the new “Hollywood Squares”— seems to have come out of nowhere recently but that is far from reality as this entertaining documentary sets out to reveal. With his wildly bushy blond hair, beard, oversized glasses and roly-poly physique, one can easily not easily forget this man, but he has actually been working behind the entertainment scene for most of his 30 years as one of the industry’s top comedy writers. Comedians Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Whoopi Goldberg – all of whom are interviewed in the film – collectively call Bruce the funniest man in Hollywood!

We find out that Bruce has been making people laugh for years with his witty, often naughty lines but not as front man but as behind-the-scenes laugh doctor for leading entertainers, politicians and actors – “everyone from Abba to Zadora.” He has also been comedy writer on almost every awards show including being head writer for the Academy Awards (and winning awards for the Billy Crystal-hosted programs). The film focuses on the former Chicago Tribune writer and features interviews with a litany of stars he has been providing laugh lines for including Midler, Crystal, Robin Williams, Lily Tomlin, Nathan Lane, Roseanne, Carol Burnett, Rosie O’Donnell, Shirley MacLaine and many, many others.
