Synopsis

In this romantic comedy set in a particularly queer corner of Dublin theatrical life, Stephen, a young actor, dances around the flirtations of director, David, before eventually succumbing to his charms. Meanwhile his best friend, John, tries making a final break as an actor as his love life takes some twists and turns with the help of escaped convict boyfriends and obsessed kinky stalkers.

Knowing where its heart is, this independently produced film achieves much on a small scale, complete with a confident, arch sense of humor and a sweet, romantic center.

Reminiscent of beloved queer flicks and TV shows from the late ‘90s – like The Broken Hearts Club or “Queer as Folk” (both the American and original U.K. versions) - Fur Coat and No Knickers is a sweet-natured romantic comedy that celebrated the importance of friendship while piling on the sex jokes and innuendo.

Cute prank and practical joke-happy roommates Stephen (Fergus McCarthy) and John (Thomas Farrell – who steals the whole show) are both struggling young actors who live in a very open and proudly gay section of Dublin (rarely seen in film). When not calling upon their manager “The Dutchess” (Frank O’Keeffe) to find them acting work, Stephen and John enjoy the ups and downs of the single life. While John pines for his super-masculine imprisoned lover, and flees from the advances of a scatologically-obsessed admirer, Stephen gets the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. He’s started dating a charming, very cute commercial director named David (Danny O’Connor) who wants to work with him in both a professional and personal sense!

Light-hearted, yet fast-paced, Fur Coat and No Knickers balances campy comedy with poignant dramatic moments that offer a glimpse into the current state of Dublin’s gay community.
