In openly gay playwright Lanford Wilson's acclaimed Broadway play, college friends, who once agitated for a better world, find themselves looking for a way to revive their dreams. Set in the American South in the post-Vietnam era, this television production stars, stage and screen's, Richard Thomas. Jeff Daniels plays his lover and Swoosie Kurtz recreates her Broadway role, which earned her the 1981 Tony Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. A milestone in television history, this broadcast in 1983 was perhaps the second (A Certain Summer was first in 1972) time a gay couple ever appeared on prime time televsion. This piece was originally broadcast on PBS.

Set in rural Missouri, this 1983 film stunned viewers not only by putting a gay couple on an even par with a non-gay couple, but by sidestepping gay issues and focusing on life issues. Both Thomas' (superfag) and Kurtz's (copper queen) characters must accept reality in their own ways. Kurtz tries to manipulate hers, while Thomas tries to run from his. Both have life partners who are protective and supportive in their own unique ways. While Thomas and Kurtz turn in stunning performances, Jeff Daniels and the rest of the cast do truly stellar work. Sally Tally's reminiscense of her late husband, and the Eskimo scene round out a smooth blend of romance and reality. This film won't become dated - a must have!
