A surreal and extraordinary view of Oscar Wilde's time in Reading Gaol, where he served five years hard labor for being a "sodomite".
Oscar Wilde's story has been told before in the terrific films The Trials of Oscar Wilde and Wilde, but never have we been taken to be with gay hero Wilde in jail. This film mixes short musical numbers sung by a Greek chorus of prisoners with memory plays of better times, recreations of important parts of his novels and plays, and the reality of Wilde's harsh life in prison. The story is well known - Oscar Wilde was a hugely popular playwright and novelist (The Importance of Being Earnest, Portrait of Dorian Gray) and talk of the town. Wilde's wit was well known in Britain and here in the states. He was also a notorious homosexual. Although married and with children his first lover and most constant friend was Robbie Ross, but his most famous affair was with Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie). This is the affair that brought him down, but it was his arrogance that sent Wilde to prison. Created by Adrian Hall and Richard Cumming, especially for Providence's Trinity Square Repertory Company, "Feasting with Panthers" has undergone a most unusual and fulfilling transformation to the screen.
