Synopsis

Director Parker follows a group of students at the New York High School of the Performing Arts from their auditions in dance, voice, drama and music through their graduation ceremony. Hot lunches, hard lessons and dancing in the street. Cara sings the Oscar-winning title song.

As far as gay stuff goes, McCrane (E.R.; RoboCop) is a sensitive just-coming-out gay man who longs for Barry Miller's character from afar. A sojourn to a midnight showing of Rocky Horror at the 8th St. Playhouse features a cameo from over-the-top Rocky fan-club president Sal Piro, as well as the ubiquitous Rocky fans. Lots of lycra-covered male-dancer bulges, too. And of course, the music is terrific.
