We have to be thankful for Here! TV for its bringing us some of the best GLBT television. Here’s new documentary series may be a mouthful to say but it is a pleasure to watch. For the sake of brevity, I’ll call the series “Everything”. It is made up of seven episodes of which I have seen the first three on a screener sent to me.
Sixteen porn stars appear in the series (among whom are Beau Benton, Johnny Hazzard, Jason Ridge, Jeremy Jordan and Jason Hawke) and they make candid remarks as to how they got into the industry, how they perform, about their personal life. They share the highs and the lows of the gay porn industry and I found myself thinking about aspects of porn that I had never considered.
John Roeker is the director of the series and he somehow managed to get the men to talk about issues and aspects of porn that many of us are unaware of. Some of the guys look at their careers in porn as their professions while others are totally consumed by the work that they do. Watching the episodes is much like having one on one conversation with the guys and they answer questions matter of factly. What also seems to develop during the series is camaraderie between them. I also found myself feeling a friendship with the guys.
Each episode is 30 minutes long and it is amazing how much can be packed into a half an hour, The seventh and final episode which I am really looking forward to seeing is an hour long and it deals entirely with and is dedicated to Harlow Cuadra. Cuadra is a gay porn star and producer who is now in prison for allegedly killing a rival gay porn producer. Cuadra tells how he became involved in porn and how things turned not just bad but tragic for him.
Gay porn has become a mega-industry and makes millions of dollars each year and “Everything” shows us the inside of the business by telling us about many different experiences. Of course one documentary cannot show us everything but at least we have a step inside.
The series is a step forward for us as we get to understand aspects of an industry that we know so little about. This is a series that you do not want to miss.
I first reviewed this Here TV! Documentary several months ago but I had not received the final episodes so I’ll take this opportunity to fill you in. This is a seven part film that consists of interviews with porn stars and shows their sensitivities and humanity as well as their sensuousness. They are given questions both fearlessly and gently and we meet men who make up an important part of the gay community by giving us a substitute for safe-sex. Sometimes in today’s politically correct world we forget that homosexuality is a sex driven way of life and that part of being gay is being sexual. It is not all there is to being gay but it is a major element.
The film gets quite dark in the final episodes because it tells the story of Harlowe Cuadra, an escort and porn star who has been found guilty of murdering a film producer. This was filmed before he even went on trial and he denies it completely. It seems that Cuadra simply wanted to just make movies and became mixed up with the wrong people.
The entire film is fascinating and gives us a look at the industry of pornography as we hear about it from those that are actually a part of it. The film is a learning experience that is exceptionally well done.
