Synopsis

Acclaimed up-and-coming teen actor Ezra Miller (Afterschool, City Island) takes on the role of an openly gay high school student who is, due to his cynical, cool-kid nature, embarassed by his fully supportive, though misunderstood father (Liev Schreiber) in this winning family comedy/drama.

Mid life is a scary period of time—one is neither here nor there but in the middle. There are expectations and there are desires and they seldom are the same. Our hero Ned (Live Schreiber) has reached mid life and is facing the crisis. He has been a writer for soft porn TV shows but he does not find satisfaction there. His teen son has informed the family that he is gay; his eleven year old son is afraid of everything and his wife, Jeannie (Helen Hunt), has brought her bitter father (Brian Dennehy) to live with them and his marriage is going through precarious times.
This is one of the most realistic comedies I have ever seen. This is the first film for writer and director Richard Levine and he is off to a great start. He shows us how much a job can affect a life and marriage and that being an adult is no great thing.
Ned and Jeannie have been married for 19 years and now Jeannie no longer enjoys sex and her father is the object of her attention. Ethan (Skylark Forgang), the younger son is having a hard time getting along with his brother, Jonah (Ezra Miller) now that he has told people that he is gay. The issues we see are real but instead of feeling sorry, we laugh.
