Synopsis

Nathan has moved to a new town — apparently his family moves often and rather quickly. Nathan’s dad is a nasty, violent drunk and his mother stands by, helplessly watching her son crumble under the abuse. Luckily Nathan has hiding places where he’s safe with his fantasies. The boy has developed a crush on his blond-haired neighbor Roy, which quickly turns from daydreams to reality. They steal time to make sweet love in secret, keeping the relationship hidden from their families and Roy’s suspicious buddies. The boys can’t imagine why Roy hangs out with the sissy boy Nathan. The group of friends plans a camping trip that misfires from the very beginning — there are darker motives and forces at work here than a simple camping expedition. But even the scheming teens don’t anticipate the dark events that take place that fateful day. Director James Bolton (The Graffiti Artist) has worked wonders in bringing Jim Grimsley’s delicate, classic gay novel to the screen intact. With its moss-covered live oaks, teen gay love and worn country paths, Dream Boy is a stunning literary adaptation.

I must admit that even before I saw this film that I was destined to love it –first it is based on a book by one of my literary heroes, Jim Grimsley and second, it is set in Louisiana where I grew up. The film is something of a cross between a coming-of-age tale and a ghost story. It deals with the themes of sexual repression, young love, sexuality and sexual abuse.
Nathan (Stephan Bender) is a new boy in town and he finds himself smitten with the blond, long haired, sensitive farm boy Roy (Max Roeg). Roy lives in the house next to his and he drives the school bus when he is not in class. Roy seems to enjoy the way Nathan looks at him and the two really hit it off when Nathan offers to help Roy with his homework which of course becomes “homo work”. Nathan is very happy with the situation but there are tensions at home that threaten to ruin everything for him. His father, Harland (Thomas Jay Ryan) has been abusing his son sexually and his mother, Vivian (Diana Scarwid) has the feeling that the abuse is about to start again. Roy can’t help but notice that Nathan obviously has some notice of different sexual positions.
Roy is one of the “in crowd” and his friends are jocks who are homophobic. When Roy decides to go on a camping trip with his two buddies, he brings Nathan along and when the sun sets they begin swapping ghost stories and soon the two friends begin to understand what is going on between Roy and Nathan. A chain of events begins that will change everyone’s lives and the audience is left reeling.
The tone and feel of the film is amazing and the actors are uniformly excellent. Whike the movie focuses on the burgeoning romance between Nathan and Roy it also takes a good hard look at small town repression. There are aspects of the film that are Southern gothic and others that are supernatural and I can see why some do not like the film. For me, it was a gem of a viewing experience.
