"Approved by the Maryland State Board of Censors" -- This warning appears at the beginning of this wide-ranging documentary of Waters' career and it certainly reassures the wary viewer! We are treated to interviews with John Waters, his brother and Mom and Dad. We hear from his peers and his admirers including filmmakers Hal Hartley, Steve Buscemi and David O Russell. Waters' films, even his newest Hollywood creations, have always pushed the envelope a little further. The last film censor in America, Mary Avara gives her take on Water's films, "RT. I have my own rating: Real Trash." From John Waters' first film Mondo Trasho to his latest Pecker we have witnessed a career of complete originality and wit, and this documentary honors that. It is a postcard of the early years with a coda of Waters' filming Lily Taylor in the big budget (comparatively) film Pecker. A true confection for the John Waters and Divine fan. There's plenty of good footage, including Waters editing and shooting his own films by hand in his lean(er) early years, and performance footage of Divine live on stage. There are interviews with all the Waters' cast and crew including Mink Stole, Divine, David Lochary and even the set and costume design guys for Pink Flamingos. And there's some classic footage of Waters and Divine behind the scenes, waiting for the dog from Pink Flamingos to, er, produce. This wildly entertaining film could convert those who haven't fully appreciated Waters before; his fans will be in divine bliss.
