Visit Grizelda, Queen Carlotta, Princess Coo-Coo and the denizens of "Mortville" in this white-trash fairy tale from John Waters. Waters' most blatently queer film -- featuring a transvestite cop, leather-clad biker boys and a bevy of tough-talking dykes accompanied by their buxemly kittenish girlfriends. Warped, nauseating, disgusting and appalling -- why, it's almost criminal!
A favorite for John Waters fans despite the absence of Divine, this high-volume, determinedly offensive camp comedy is also Waters’ most blatantly queer film – featuring a transvestite cop, leather-clad biker boys and a bevy of tough-talking dykes accompanied by their buxomly kittenish girlfriends. Mink Stole stars as Peggy Gravel, a high-strung, borderline schizoid who, with the help of her 400-pound black maid Grizelda kills her hapless bubby. Together, they go on the lam, eventually finding refuge in Mortville, a disgusting haven for perverts, murders and worse, and ruled by porcine despot Queen Carlotta (Edith Massey). Lesbians with a sense of humor will take delight (humorless, PC lesbians are cautioned to stick with another viewing of Desert Hearts) in the many lesbian characters including mole-faced Mo and her lingerie-queen gf Muffy St. Jacques. Don’t miss the lesbian glory hole scene where poor Peggy seeks a place of peace only to discover two bouncy breasts thrusted at her from the adjoining cubicle. And in John Waters’ warped sense of justice, his “happy ending” has evil overcoming evil as the outraged denizens of Mortville cannibalistically revolt.
