Here is the inspiring story of Troy Perry, a major hero of the GLBT community and a remarkable preacher who for decades fought for gay rights inside and out of the church.
When you think of gay civil rights, you usually don’t think of religion. Or if you do, chances are it’s not in a positive way. Troy Perry is an individual that more than breaks the mold. Call Me Troy chronicles the life of an important man in the fight for gay civil rights. We learn how, after the unexpected death of his father, Troy supported his family and filled the paternal role. Early on, Troy also held a relationship with God, but struggled coming to terms with his sexuality. Troy is a preacher. After a suicide attempt, Troy’s faith was renewed as he realized he was an openly gay man and a Christian, and his life was given new purpose. What began as a search for acceptance eventually became a quest for civil liberties. Troy persevered against immense odds only to perpetually find himself up against even greater challenges. But each time Troy put himself in the middle of conflict, unyielding and always willing.
Reverend Troy Perry’s story is moving and inspiring. He’s a hero of the GLBT community, and some much-needed light is being shed on his deeds. For anyone interested in a positive message about the conflict of religion and sexuality, this might just be the answer to your prayers.

An Inspiration

Troy Perry is best known as the founder of the Metropolitan Community Church which was the first church to recognize the spiritual needs of the gay community. He was also the first gay person to serve on the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations. He performed the first public same-sex wedding in 1960 and in 1970 he filed the first lawsuit to seek legal recognition for same-sex marriages. He has been an advisor to the President and an outspoken advocate. This film looks at his life and his legacy.
This is a wonderfully moving movie and has something to say to the youth of today who are not familiar with Perry. The film lets us see just how far we have come. Many of the doors that were opened for us were opened by Perry and since it is the youth of today who will continue opening doors, this movie has a special importance. Scott Bloom gives us a truly inspirational film about a guy who has managed to live free in the glow of spiritual devotion. His life is amazing and you will laugh and cry and get angry as you watch it. This is not a movie about a church but a movie that follows a great leader and activist.
