Dru and Thom have been together for three years, and despite Thom's occasional bouts of insecurity and Dru's fear of rejection, their relationship is rock solid. By Any Other Name, a novel by Sydnee Capri, is the story of Dru and Thom. It’s a sweet love story that brings with it the pain and heartache suffered by Dru’s childhood friend Skye. Skye left town when he was 17 after both his parents passed. Dru never understood why Skye never contacted him until he gets a call from Boston. Apparently Skye needs someone and Dru’s is the only name that he could think of as a friendly place to be –a place to call home. So, Thom and Dru decide to give it a go, to bring a battered soul into their home while knowing only a little of his past. What ensues is a tale of rebuilding a life and a friendship and sharing love. Can it work for all three?
Fielding tells a story of giving, sharing and love without overstating the issues or overpowering the reader with the nuances of the story. While Skye rebuilds his life, he realizes he has had feelings for Dru for a long time. Dru has always known that he had feelings for Skye and has told as much to Thom. So many emotions come into play: Dru fears abandonment due to his own upbringing and Thom feels inadequate compared to the beautiful Dru. Can they give Skye what he needs and maintain the loving relationship that they have? What becomes of the feelings that they all share?
I can’t say that the premise of this story resonates with me, although it is interesting and engaging. I can’t comprehend sharing my lover. I can, however, say that I know that love can be boundless and it takes a lot of work. This is really a sweet story about strength and resolve. About reconciling loss and reclaiming life. And it’s pretty darn good book!
