Review

An outstanding quartet of films that begins with a gay coming of age, follows through the gaining of wisdom and concludes with aging and death. This selection of short films wooed the crowds at last summer's gay film fests, and it's ours now.
Crush (Phillip Bartell, 27 min) Robbie is a gawky 16-year-old whose fondness for boy bands delights the 12-year-old Tina until she learns just how much he likes them. Eventually realizing that the only way to keep her new friend is to help him find happiness with the boy of his dreams, Tina puts a plan in motion. This wonderful short film has some amateurish moments, but the earnestness and essential truth of the film shine through to make a wonderful little film.
The Mountain King (Duncan Tucker, 19 min) is an excellent, seductive fable about two twentysomething strangers -- one a "straight" boy and one a gay hustler -- who meet on a beach and return to a nearby house for sex and skinny dipping. After their night together, however, one's innocence is gone forever. Pitch perfect performances and excellent camera work make for a sexy and fun short.
...lost. (Dan Castle, 5 min) is the shortest but sexiest of the bunch. Two gorgeous men get it on – rather graphically – in the middle of the afternoon and then simply say "bye". The film attempts quite succesfully to portray the shallowness of the gay male subculture of quickie sex and drugs.
The Confession (Carl Pfirman, 22 min) is a poignant story about an elderly gay couple who come to terms with their relationship when one of them, who is dying, suddenly requests a priest. The final short with difficult subject matter manages to remain breezy and instructive for all of you guys out there who mistakenly think life ends for a gay men at 40.
A mature, sexy, smart and enlightening collection, these shorts all feature fine performances and showcase the talents of some notable up and coming gay filmmakers.
