Synopsis

Picture This! has gathered together six excellent short films about men who work in the oldest profession. At night, a world comes to life in the shadows of streetlamps, in the stalls of public restrooms, in the apartments of the well-to-do. This is a world most guys only dream about. But the world of the hustler is very real, and you will experience it yourself in these short films where hustlers fall in love, service their clients, and keep their secrets at all costs.

Be prepared for a fairly maudlin collection of films. The highlight for us is the award-winning Gold with not only outstanding acting, but a superlative story as well.

Boy -- Directed by Welby Ings / 15min.
Touching and unusual, this is the story of a young male hustler in a small New Zealand town who discovers the truth behind a fatal hit-and-run accident. Starring Jesse Lee, Bryan Bevege, Tammy Warwick, and Luke Thompson.
Build -- Directed by Greg Atkins / 23min.
An architecture student quits his studies in order to support his alcoholic mother by hustling. An excellent short, our one criticism is that it's a bit too long. The sexual longing depicted is startling in its reality. Starring Nancy Beatty, Greg Atkins, and D. Garnet Harding.
Gold -- Directed by Armen Kazazian / 16min.
Gorgeously acted and written, this was our favorite short from the 2005 film festival circuit. An aging artist who is losing his vision employs a drug-addicted street hustler to paint his paintings for him in a mutual quest for salvation. Starring Aron Tager and P.J. Lazic.
Into the Night -- Directed by Tony Krawitz / 15min.
A lost and fragile boy new to the streets… A wary teenager just thinking about the money... A wealthy man playing out a delicate and lonely game… Over one night their lives intersect in unexpected ways, blurring the line between betrayer and betrayed. Starring Bryan Marshall, Sam Barlow, and Sebastian Lamour.
Gigolo -- Directed by Bastian Schweitzer / 15min.
We were shocked to be disappointed by this film. We love French film and the work of Salim Kéchiouche, but this just didn't gel for us. A good looking young Arab boy whores himself to men and women of the Parisian jet-set. Starring Salim Kéchiouche (Three Dancing Slaves, Grande Ecole), Amanda Lear, Stéphane Rolland. (French with English subtitles)
Rock Bottom -- Directed by Mary Feuer / 22min.
While we thought the film was impeccably acted, we have problems with how the message was conveyed. The producers assured us the filmmakers intended the message to be drug-negative, it felt to us like the film made crack seem harmless. See for yourselves! There are interviews with each of the filmmakers included in the extras, we're eager to hear this one. A lonely writer and a young street hustler find themselves in a sometimes tender, sometimes tense game of trust. After a night of drugs, sex, games, and deception, it is clear they need each other. Is it true love, or have they both hit rock bottom? Starring Timothy Lee DePriest and John Militello.

Hot on the heels of the wonderful “Boys Briefs” is the new anthology “Boys Briefs 4” and it is all about hustling. Picture This Entertainment in continuing to bring us wonderful collections of gay short films has assembled a DVD that deals with those guys who sell their bodies and I really enjoyed it. In addition to the short films, the bonus section of the DVD is made up of interviews with the guys who directed the films which give an added dimension to the viewings. Each of the films is a gem and I learned to look at hustling in a completely different manner after having watched these films.
“Into the Night” is about a hustler who seems to be hard but in reality shows he has a heart of gold. While working his usual spot on the street, he meets a new addition to the “profession” and takes him under his wing. This is in stark contrast to the way he treats the customer we see him with and he shows the vulnerable side of those guys that we think have no feelings---except for money.
“Boy” was the most difficult to understand and it took several viewings to really get the entire story but now as I look back at it, it is probably the best f the bunch and certainly is the most original. It is basically a silent film about a young boy who discovers what really happened during a hit and run accident.
Do you remember Amanda Lear? She is one of the stars of “Gigolo”. Here we have a young Arab boy, a male whore, who works the streets of Paris but only deals with the jet setters. This film is extremely realistic and hard hitting.
“Build” is simply wonderful but I had seen it somewhere before—I just can’t remember where. A good looking, hunky architecture student has to drop out of school and start hustling in order to support his mother who is an alcoholic. While at work one night he becomes friendly with another hustler and….
We don’t often think of the word “trust” when he think of hustlers but “Rock Bottom” is a beautiful little film about just that. A lonely writer and a teenaged hustler suddenly find that they have feelings for each other and what evolves is a tender look at a game of trust.
Finally there is “Gold” about a blind artist who has hired a young druggie to do his paintings for him. We see that both men are looking for some kind of salvation and they become co-dependent. This is not exactly a love story but it did leave me feeling fuzzy.
Here is another successful anthology—one toad to your collection of short films. Perhaps it is not exactly the topic we all talk about but it certainly gives a new look to the guys of the street.
