With this film Boy, talented director Auraeus Solito is back in fine form with this wonderful story about a boy who goes to one of Manila’s famed Macho Dancer bars and becomes entranced with the beauty of a performer. Our unnamed protagonist, a budding teenage poet, begins the film as a tentative young man, but finishes with a burst of adult sexuality and assertiveness. Boy heads out to the club where dancers try one after another to seduce the lone cute boy in their mostly empty club. Boy resists them all until Aries hits the stage. With an animal magnetism that grabs the boy's attention, Boy runs home to get the money to rent his first man. He sells his childhood collection of comics and action figures so he can participate in a rite of manhood. The Boy brings Aries home and they bond — and not just sexually — in one of the hottest and beautifully filmed lovemaking scenes in the gay filmmaking canon. Auraeus Solito's (The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros)has a new film out that has caused all kinds of controversy. "Boy" is a coming-of-age story about a young poet who discovers his sexuality and falls in love with a young "macho dancer". I don't see what the hullabaloo was all about. I watched the film and found it beautifully tasteful.
A boy (Aeious Asin) goes into a gay nightclub one Saturday night and it is empty except for those who work there and the usual crowd--the floor manager, some overdressed drag queen performers and the featured attractions of the club, half-naked "macho dancers" who dance to songs of love eternal. "Boy" has never been to the club before and knows nothing about the gay lifestyle so he has no idea of the rules that are followed Of course, the floor manager is glad to clue him in. Suddenly an 18 year old dancer takes the stage and boy is mesmerized although he does not understand what has caused the attraction.
The film is highly erotic yet as I stated it is extremely tastefully presented. The eroticism comes across by implication and it is highly homoerotic. What the film does is explore the gay psyche by exposing the mysteries of homosexual attraction and the way to self-discovery and acceptance. The director gives us the fundamentals of gay love, picturing it with the normalcy that is given to heterosexual love--both kinds of love are fueled by the same elements but only marked as different by the way society looks at them.
The love scene is tender and we watch the two make love through a glass, through water, through the aquarium that the boy has in his room. Here cinema approximates truth by creating an illusion of reality. Homosexuals have their concept of love intertwined with capitalistic oppression of a sinful lifestyle that is exclusively powered by hedonistic and animalistic tendencies (or says the Filipinos). Watching the two making love through the aquarium. we understand what gives life to homosexual love. There is no pretext of perfect love here or even pushing the boundaries to touch soci0-economic issues. It is simply two boys making love simply because they have reached that point.
