Magnificently literary autobiography and memoir of author Rick Whitaker's time as a hustler. Rick came to NYC, like many young men, on a bus with only a little money and a pretty face. He was a highly intellectual young man struggling through college while working at underpaid publishing jobs. The allure of being a call boy was not just financial. Rick, and most hustlers, got off on being admired and loved. He liked the high life - quite literally. Rick became addicted to crystal meth, cocaine and alcohol - and he played around with heroin and even smoked crack. His tales of the tricks are a combination of harrowing and arousing. Some of the johns were loving and honoring - others were dangerous - like the crack addicted psychiatrist who had sealed his windows with plastic bags and duct tape. Assuming the Position manages to expose to us why a man becomes a hustler - giving a hard-on in the process - and shows us just how dangerous a living it is. Certainly the finest expose of the male escort business I've read.
"How did I come to prostitution? The answer is a complicated one, the first time I hustled I went into a bar on the East Side well known for its clientele of hustlers and johns. I had, at the time, a rather dubious motive aside from a real but customary need for money. I wanted to experience something intense."
