Synopsis

The only way football star Stefan Djordjevic (Tom Cruise) will avoid a life in the blast furnaces of his bleak Pennsylvania hometown is by winning a college scholarship. Even his coach (Craig T. Nelson) dreams of parlaying a winning team into a college job far away from this graveyard of the American Dream. But it's not long before the two virtually ruin each other's chances for escape and their door to the future starts to close. Lea Thompson and Christopher Penn co–star.

Review

An earnest Cruise plays a Pennsylvania high school football star who sees an athletic scholarship as a way out of his small mining town. In a bit of typecasting, Nelson also stars as his hot–tempered coach—himself looking for a ticket out. The small town life depicted here is quite effective, and Cruise shows off some terrific acting chops in what is basically a teen angst love story.

The big reason you boys may want to check this one out is that during his and Lea Thompson's love scene, we get a full (and so far, the only) look at Tom's pink cruise missile. Screen captures of "it" have been floating around the Net for years, so unless you have a real Tom fetish, love coal, or simply adore small town life football, you may want to rethink your night's entertainment. Predictably uneventful, but slickly directed and performed.
