Synopsis

A subtle comedy/drama about a hunky guy who hires a hustler instead of dealing with the emotions required in a relationship.

Review

In this sprightly American indie, first-time director/writer Richard LeMay has crafted a modest, yet pleasing story of love -- both lost and gained. Conrad is an uptight SOB who rules his advertising agency and life with strict controls. His lover walked out on him for being such a control freak and his employees are always frustrated. Rather than deal with finding a new lover, or more likely, allowing true emotions to actually happen, he hires a hunky Australian call boy for sexual pleasure. Suffice it to say Conrad doesn't have to hire a prostitute for sex, he's a stud. Ian arrives at his doorstep and the whole sex for money thing seems so easy. This is until Conrad offers Ian a job at his company and things get real complicated real fast. While the subjects of 200 American are sex and romance, there are no lingering shots of male torsos here. The director is trying to get our attention towards the story and off the nudity -- which isn't here. This isn't your ordinary "gay hustler" film -- there are plot twists galore and even a budding romance.

200 American a neat date movie

Paigar wrote on 10/14/2006:

A very lovely film that explores the difficulty that gay men have in forming and keeping relationships. I feel that this is a very moving and sexy movie that reminds us that honesty is and always will be the best policy. NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!

0 (No Stars)  Boring and Amateurish

The only stiff thing in this was the acting.
Oh, and the dialogue.

I'd seen latter Days the night before and this was like a high school film project in comparison. Save your money, guys.

  Waste of money and time

Honestly, the plot was lame, the acting was terrible, the dialogue was amateur.. Some nudity and sex might have made it worth the three bucks I spent to rent it but there was none to be found.. I literally spent maybe the last half hour of the movie fast forwarding in the hope of finding some redeeming aspect.. At least it ended.. There are much better movies to waste your money on..

  Sweet "dramady

Ian is an Ausie immigrant in his early 20's who has come to New York
City, originally for a relationship that failed, but who wishes to
stay in order to re-establish his sense of worthiness and self
esteem. To make that happen, he cashes in on his "worth" as a
companion for the evening, naming "200 American" dollars as his
price, in this 2003 low-budget film by first-time
director/screenwriter Richard LeMay.

One of his customers is advertising agency owner Conrad (Mark
Walton), who is still recovering from emotional hurt from his
boyfriend ditching him for being "controlling", who realizes that
the young man is not your typical hustler. He offers him a job at
his agency, partially to help Ian get experience in his dream
profession of photography, but also to keep him around as a sexual
partner. If this is starting to sound like a gay version of "Pretty
Woman," that's because there are definitely similarities, although a
co-worker of Conrad's becomes more interested in Ian romantically
than he does. The film ultimately becomes a rather touching and
sweet lesson on the need for honesty in a relationship, and
understanding that we all have done things in our lives we later
regret.

Considering that the film was shot with no budget with volunteer
actors and crew, the result is remarkably professional, with
occasional lapses (views of a microphone, editing mismatches, etc.)
much less than I would have expected. As Ian (who also uses the
name Tyler while hustling), newcomer Sean Matic shows significant
depth as an actor, as well as showing off a trim hunky bod that is
featured prominently as the cover art on the DVD cover. While rated
R for content, there is no nudity or simulated sex on screen, and I
recommend checking out the DVD, which also has a director's
commentary which may be enlightening to aspiring filmmakers.

Not A Bad Way To Spend An Evening

Gay Movie Viewer (jamesvmorris@verizon.net) wrote on 12/20/2004:

The premise sounded cute, and I do have a penchant for comedy, so I purchased this film assuming that it would be a typical independent gay video. In other words, I expected it to be poorly acted, poorly directed and have a marginal plot used as a barely justified excuse to show lots of beefcake. Surprise! Although there were certain aspects of the plot that I found ridiculous (the main one being the idea that the rich, handsome, muscular, intelligent advertising exec would hire a relatively skinny immature male hustler and then fall in love with him) the picture managed to grab my attention fairly early on and hold it. The main problem for me was that I personally found the hustler to be the least sexually appealing of the three main characters. Since the ad exec (to my taste) was ten times better looking than the hustler he lusts after, I didn’t buy it for a second. However, I was pleased by the fact that the film didn’t seem to pander to viewers only interested in seeing naked torsos, and the humor came across as genuine and, in spots, quite clever. As the film progressed, I found myself warming to the characters, and their situations suddenly seemed almost believable. In the end, I decided I liked this movie quite a bit more than I thought I would. You may too, as long as you don’t expect too much more than a pleasant romantic diversion.
